Someone on the SWTOR put up a contest for digital painting a themed Star Wars piece. the theme was "To Glory". so heres a quickie i did for it!
This is beautiful. What do you use to make the lightsabers?
For this one i played with Gaussian blur is all. I made one layer of the base red/blue I wanted. then inside that I did the same with a lighter blue. then I used gaussian blur on them both (separate layers), til they got to where I liked it. Then made another layer on top of those to put a solid white line in the middle. after that I used a airbrush type brush low in "flow" and "Opacity" to add the glow around them and onto the surrounding clothes or objects. 
Thank you for posting that...wow! They turned out great, I will have to try this technique.
Ya just play around with those it should work out. On my post of Zallya, I did it differently. I used a water color brush and no blur. but same way, main color, then inside, the blade, then the glows.
